ABI backs Equality Act exemption

The Association of British Insurers (ABI) has welcomed confirmation from the Home Office that the incoming Equality Act will not apply to financial services.

Home Secretary Theresa May said in the announcement that insurers would only be expected to take age into account when it is relevant to the risk.

Malcolm Tarling, spokesman for the ABI, said this broad exemption was “what we expected”.

He commented: “Not surprisingly we support this as insurers only take age into account where it is relevant to the risk.
