Western Provident Association is aiming to corner the private medical
insurance market with its new Internet arm called XS. It claims the new
site, which offers comprehensive cover from £50 to £626 a year, will cut
premiums by up to 80%. The non-profit-making insurer is offering this
reduced-cost cover on the basis that policyholders below the age of 60 pay
an excess of £1500, with over-60s paying an excess of £3000. The insurer
is aiming to have 1000 clients within the next year.
