Growing pains.

The risks associated with genetically modified crops have dominated the headlines in recent months. The problem for farmers, insurers and brokers is that the risks are, as yet, unquantifiable, says Adrian Leonard.

Rarely has agriculture been more in the spotlight: first the beef
crisis and genetically modified crops, and now cannibalistic pigs. Even
The Archers and Prince Charles have taken up the issue. Meanwhile, amid
the furore from supporters and antagonists, farmers' liability matters
have been quietly simmering.


Direct insurer National Farmers Union Mutual has very firm views on
GM.


The insurer, which covers around 70% of Britain's farmers, says those that
are growing GM produce, and thus risking
