The cost of an average comprehensive motor policy has increased by
£44.91 since July last year, according to the latest British Insurance
Premium Index from the AA. This is due to a combination of rate increases
and a 1% rise in insurance premium tax.


The index shows that premiums for comprehensive motor insurance rose by
11.5% between July 1996 and 1997, by 8% between 1997 and 1998, and by a
further 10% in the 12 months to July 1999. Non-comprehensive motor
premiums have followed a similar pattern
