Legal action can be a costly affair, so directors and officers (D&O) should be covered, but as Ewan Campbell investigates, could rising D&O premium costs make them uninsurable?

Recent events at Shell have shown that even the directors of such an august company can be economical with the truth, and potentially expose themselves to legal action. Hence the need for companies to protect their top brass with Directors' and Officers' (D&O) cover. But, D&O premiums are reported to have spiralled so alarmingly that larger companies have begun to look at other ways of transferring risk.

A survey last year by the Association of Insurance and Risk Managers (Airmic) found that a
