Despite being a nation of animal lovers, most Britons have no understanding of what their pets could end up costing them in terms of veterinary bills or liability damages. As 80% of domestic animals are uninsured, the market for pet insurance would seem to have huge potential for growth - but it's not as easy as it might seem, says Matt Warner
The British are famous for loving their animals; we can't to seem to get enough of our furry friends. Currently there are 7m dogs providing companionship across the country, while British laps are warmed by 8m cats. Almost 50% of UK households have a pet, with cats and dogs still being the most favoured - although the UK also boasts 1.8m domestic rabbits.
Owners will meet almost any expense to protect their pets' wellbeing.
