Hastings Direct has come under fire from consumers, after it cancelled 3,000 policies based on what it described as a "programming error".

Affected policyholders - mainly young drivers and those living in 'Area 40' postcodes (city centres in areas such as Liverpool, Manchester and Bradford) - were sent a letter informing them that their policy was being cancelled, and that they had seven days to make alternative insurance arrangements.
