Scottish referral fee ban produces UK's lowest rate of whiplash claims

A ban on referral fees under Law Society of Scotland rules of practice has resulted in the country recording the lowest rate of whiplash claims in the UK.

Research by the Department of Work and Pensions found there were three whiplash claims for every 1,000 residents in both Edinburgh and Dundee in the year to March 2011 – compared to 22 in Liverpool, 21 in Uxbridge, West London, and 20 in Oldham.

The study also revealed that nine of the 10 postcode areas with the lowest whiplash claim count were in Scotland.

The Law Society rules have, it is believed, led to fewer accident management companies operating in Scotland and there are stricter time

FSCS gives first insight on increasing levy to £394m

The Financial Services Compensation Scheme has indicated its levy for 2025/26 will rise to £394m from £265m this financial year as it cited having lower surpluses to carry forward and offset bills – a factor that has benefited brokers for two years in a row.
