Please forgive my indulgence in nostalgia. It is now 50 years since I walked - as an apprehensive 16-year-old - into Commercial Union's (CU) office in Southampton to start my first job on the princely salary of £240 a year.

Like most people in our industry, insurance was not a first choice. Indeed, it did not feature on my career radar at all. My family was steeped in aviation and Southampton was a busy passenger ship port and the 'boat boys' were the envy of the young - travelling the world with plenty of money in their pockets. I wanted to design aircraft, become a ship's purser or, failing that, join the Foreign Office. This was not to be. Guided by a careers counsellor who was much wiser than me, I was steered
