Just occasionally you have to admire the Machiavellian ways of politicians. In the run-up to last month’s Budget the rumour was that IPT could be increased again by 3.5% as it was in July 2015.
When the hike eventually came in at 0.5% – with a claim that the revenue would be spent on the nation’s flood defences – it was almost as if we should be relieved. However, that would be to utterly miss the point. It still went up and deserved challenging.
