Asbestos - Dealing with the dust
Updated Government regulations concerning the removal and maintenance of asbestos in commercial buildings are expected to come into force next spring. Kevin Grealis and Glyn Smith consider how the new rules are likely to change the insurance industry's handling of building repair claims in the future
Asbestos is the greatest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK, killing as many as 3,000 people a year - a figure that is set to rise, with latest estimates suggesting that 10,000 people will die from exposure to the substance annually by 2010. Hardly surprising, then, that the Government revisited and updated the Control of Asbestos at Work Regulations (CAWR) in 2002. The changes it made are likely to affect insurers in a number of ways.
