The Home Office launched a pilot scheme which would levy £200 fixed penalties for uninsured drivers, and said it would study plans that could see uninsured drivers forced to undertake community service.
The pilot will see 23 police services across the UK using the new insurance motor database to check at the roadside whether a driver is insured. If not, they will receive the fixed penalty and three points on their licence.
Police officers will, however, still have the option of reporting drivers
