Mass, the Motor Accident Solicitors Society, has said it is delighted that the Government has overturned a ruling by the House of Lords regarding the gritting of icy roads. A previous ruling by the Law Lords in June 2000 put millions of road-users at risk when they decided that local authorities were not responsible if roads became slippery due to snow, ice or mud. The Highways Act 1980 has now been amended, and it is now the responsibility of councils and highways authorities to grit icy roads.
