The Food Standards Agency has put the cat amongst the chickens byreleasing research indicating that organic and free-range birds are twiceas likely to carry a type of bacteria that could cause food poisoning.
Early findings by scientists at Bristol University showed that thewaterborne bacterium campylobacter, which is said to cause around 60,000cases of food poisoning a year in humans, was found in 100% of organicchickens, compared to 58% of those raised in sheds.
