Raising the wind
It may not be the easiest climate for insurers and brokers to raise capital but recent legislative changes could have a calming effect. The question is, how long until the impact of these proposals are felt, asks Gary Thorpe
A range of brokers and underwriters have raised, or will be looking to raise, money over the coming year. In the case of underwriters, they have been hit by a perfect storm of rising claims costs, a depreciating pound relative to the dollar and poor investment income. Many need further capital to offset these factors and to take advantage of rising premiums, meanwhile brokers might be looking for additional capital to expand their businesses - possibly through acquisition.
