Norwich Union (NU) has defended a dual-pricing experiment on some of its personal-lines products against criticism from brokers that it is punishing loyal policyholders.

One broker complained to Insurance Age that existing NU customers had to pay up to £80 more to renew a policy than new customers did to buy cover for the first time.

The insurer said it held its "winter sale" from August to September last year in an "experiment" to shake up the sticky household market and get new customers on
