Polly heard a very interesting tale the other day about an ex-brickie whose house had suffered from subsidence. Allegedly, the insurer involved had not only underpinned his property for him, but had insisted on masonry reinforcement. This involved chipping out the old mortar and replacing it; however, the experts couldn't get the colour right and had left unsightly horizontal stripes round the house. The exasperated ex-brickie then offered to do it himself, if they'd give him £200. He mixed up
