European Commission in disagreement over compulsory cover for cyclists and pedestrians

The European Commission has broadly welcomed the European Parliament's opinion on the proposed fifth motor insurance directive, which aims to update and improve the provisions of the motor insurance directives in force.

The Directive aims to make it easier for drivers to get insurance and improve the protection of victims. The Commission has indicated that it will be able to agree to six of the amendments approved by the European Parliament.

However, it said it would accept the Parliament's proposal to delete the provision which would improve protection for pedestrians and cyclists.
