Revelations that two-thirds of new cars fail to meet acceptable safety standards are set to shame car manufacturers and disappoint the insurance industry, which pays out £1.6bn annually in whiplash claims.
The research, carried out by motor insurance research centre Thatcham, tested 114 different car seats, and found only 40% reached acceptable safety levels when involved in a low-speed crash.
The report coincides with recent comments made by the chairman of the European New Car Assessment
