Car owners may be proud of their own vehicles but can be less careful with company cars, safe in the knowledge they will not have to foot the bill. Jack Brownhill says employers and fleet companies must throw cold water on this lazy attitude.

Who does not remember the frisson of excitement that came with being
given the keys to their first company car? Not only was it a sign of your
worth to your employer and your progress up the corporate ladder, it was
also a step up from the Austin Maxi you had been plodding around in since
your first wage packet. And what is more, it was your car but you were not
