Rumours about a takeover of Gloucester-based insurer Northern Star
were circulating around the market with alarming speed at the end of last
month.


At the time of going to press, speculation was rife that a takeover of the
company by Fortis-owned Bishopsgate, based in Dorset, was imminent.


Both insurers declined to comment on the matter.


Northern Star is owned by Italian giant Generali and has a mix of direct
and intermediary-derived business.


The company is predominantly a personal lines insurer
