Insurers NFU Mutual, Norwich Union and MMA all acquired brokers this month, refuelling the debate on how independent an insurer-owned broker can be.

MMA bought the entire Swinton chain from Royal & SunAlliance for £54m, while Norwich Union's wholly-owned subsidiary Hill House Hammond acquired Stroud-based Radbrook & Company.

NFU Mutual brought its total number of brokers to 30, with Lloyd Edwards, Barnett, Rawlinson & Bentley, Spencer, Meakin & Newbroad, Findlay Littler & Associates and
