There are now generous alternatives to traditional pension schemes for clients forced to retire early through ill health, says Keith Sankey.

Clients who belong to occupational pension schemes are fortunate.
Their employer takes most of the key decisions on how their pension is
arranged and bears a share of the costs.


One important optional extra of many such schemes is a specially increased
pension payable to any member who is forced to retire early because of
serious ill health. The Inland Revenue rules, which apply to occupational
schemes and normally give very little away, are quite generous in these
