Q: Could someone please clarify the legal position in relation toemployees taking time off to care for a dependant.
A: Employees, regardless of whether they are full-time, part-time,
permanent or temporary, have from their first day of employment, the right
to take time off during working hours to care for a sick child, or some
other dependant.
This right is unpaid unless the employee's contract of employment
specifically provides for payment for time taken to care for
dependants.
