With car thieves shifting their attention to older vehicles, persuading owners to fit anti-theft devices is set to become a crucial part of the motor broker's job, says Andrew Newman.

Alarm/immobilising systems remain the backbone of current car
security measures, and many suitable installations are now available for
under £200.


The successes attributed to tracking devices may hit the headlines, but in
such cases the initial theft is not prevented. The theft prevention
industry regards these as a very worthwhile addition to their weaponry,
but believes they cannot operate as a substitute for other protection.
