Insurers have been spared exorbitant increases in claims costs
following the Court of Appeal's decision to increase general damages for
personal injury awards by a maximum of a third.


The Law Commission had recommended that awards of £3000 or more should be
increased by between 50-100%, and awards between £2000 and £3000 by up to
50%.


The new ruling will only affect awards over £10,000, with a tapered
increase applying on damages up to £150,000. The maximum awardable sum
