The managing director of a Lichfield-based insurer has said that insurers will not offer cover for disasters such as flood damage or foot and mouth outbreaks because the risks are too high and the profits too low.

Mark Botfield of Farmcare Insurance Services said that the government's 100% compensation schemes, combined with the high cost of premium extensions, would dissuade many farmers from considering asking for this kind of policy, particularly in the instance of disease cover.

He stated that
