Unemployment fell in last three months of 2009 but 2.8 million are 'underemployed'

Total unemployment was down 3,000 between October and December last year.

The rate of unemployment remained steady at 7.8% at the end of 2009 according to the Office of National Statistics. 13,000 16 to 24-year-olds found work, and the number of temporary jobs climbed to 1.434 million from 1.427m. However, those claiming Jobseeker's allowance rose 23,500 to 1.64 million in January. Meanwhile, 2.8 million people are not working as much they would like, those with jobs which do not provide enough hours for them.
