Claims companies shoulder blame for high motor insurance

More than 50% of UK drivers blame the cost of motor insurance on claims companies and injury lawyers, according to a survey published today.

Some 52% of motorists believe the two groups are culpable while 85% of drivers think the cost is unfair, the study by claims mediation specialist InterResolve has found.

The survey - carried out by OnePoll - also threw the spotlight on insurers with 18% of people blaming them for the cost.

Last year the former justice secretary Jack Straw was at the forefront of a campaign to crack down on referral fees.
