UK commits to driverless cars
Government pledges funds for a £15m connected corridor from London to Dover and says it will “establish the UK as a global centre for excellence in connected and autonomous vehicles”.
The government has pledged to conduct trials of driverless vehicles on the strategic road network by 2017 and consult this summer on "sweeping away regulatory barriers within this Parliament to enable autonomous vehicles on England's major roads".
The aims were announced in the Budget 2016 within which the Chancellor of the Exchequer, George Osborne, pledged to "establish the UK as a global centre for excellence in connected and autonomous vehicles".
