Is diversifying dangerous?

The advent of new technology has given insurers the chance to move into non-core markets. Diane Smyth questions whether they could get their fingers burnt.

Last month, Royal & SunAlliance joined the growing list of insurers
diversifying into non-core markets with the launch of its usecolor.com
website.


Direct Line has made the most high-profile launch into a non-insurance
market with jamjar.com - its website devoted to a wide range of motoring
services. Independent and CGNU are also diversifying online and Axa hopes
to go live with an open portal site, which will include quotes from a
panel of insurers, by the end of the year.
