Favourable legislation has led to increasing numbers of freelance professionals working from home. David Fanning says that as domestic household policies do not usually provide sufficient cover, brokers must ensure homeworkers have an accurate measurement of what they need.
Around five million people in the UK now work from home. Many workfull time for an employer but an increasing amount work on a freelance
basis.
The government's new flexible working legislation has made it much easier
to work from home and is expected to encourage more to do so in
future.
At the same time, however, self-employed workers are reacting to the
Inland Revenue's IR35 tax rule, under which a freelancer working
principally for one client may be regarded as an employee for tax
purposes. The
