Standard & Poor's 1999 Insurance Market Profiles report has painted agloomy picture of the UK provincial general insurance market.
The rating agency warns that it is a shrinking market which is suffering
as a result of increased consolidation and declining premiums.
The report says that smaller players must find some form of competitive
advantage in order to survive, whether it is through obtaining a niche
position, achieving a distribution link (eg affinity business) or a lower
cost base.
