Lloyd's motor syndicate Octavian, 1228, has withdrawn from
traditional high-street broker business, admitting that this sector is no
longer profitable.


The syndicate, which went live in January 1997, has cancelled
approximately 80 agencies - the bulk of its broker base. Peter Routledge,
lead underwriter for syndicate 1228, told PB: "While we are seeing rate
increases coming into the market, we do not foresee any real signs of
