Thomas Cook has applied for Financial Services Authority regulation, in a move that commentators believe could be the start of a trend in the travel industry.
The company's bold shift away from the Association of British Travel Agents comes in the wake of a Treasury consultation led by Ed Balls, economic secretary to the Treasury, into whether the travel industry should be made to comply with FSA regulation.
A spokeswoman for Thomas Cook said that its strategy was to move into financial services
