Fighting fit?
Statistics show a rise in the number of people unable to work due to long-term sickness or injury. As state support dwindles, private insurance is shaping up as the best option, says Keith Sankey.
As a nation, we may be living longer and healthier lives, but thechances of being unable to work through long-term sickness or injury are
probably much greater than most of us think. According to the 1999 edition
of the Office of National Statistics' Social Trends, close to two million
people claimed incapacity or severe disablement benefits from the state
for more than six months in 1996-97. This figure represents a very large
proportion of the working population.
