You can never quite predict what the House of Lords is going to do.
The long-awaited ruling on personal injury awards took just about
everybody by surprise.


The three cases, Wells v Wells, Thomas v Brighton Health Authority and
Page v Sheerness Steel, concerned the calculation of lump sum awards for
cases of serious personal injury. The crucial issue was the allowance, or
"discount rate" that is applied to the lump sum to produce income.
