HBOS announced an increase of 19% in general insurance premium income to £1.6bn in 2003. All the banking giant's major product lines gave a strong performance, with overall profit before tax rising by 11% to £445m.

Michael Warren, finance director, Halifax General Insurance, commented: "The combination of strong financial performance, customer focus and business development positions HBOS favourably in its aim to become the UK's first-choice bank-related insurance business".
