Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott is today meeting health and safety chiefs to discuss the alarming rise in the number of deaths in the construction industry.
Mr Prescott was prompted to call the meeting with Bill Callaghan, chair of the Health and Safety Commission, and Rodger Evans, head of the Health and Safety Executive's construction sector, after figures published by the HSE in July showed there were 79 fatal injuries in construction in 1999/2000. This compared with 65 deaths in 1998
