The medical negligence market for doctors is still sewn up by the defence unions. But with St Paul offering cover, and the NHS facing potential liabilities of £2.4bn, Shona Cronin asks whether this sector is set to open up.
The market for medical negligence insurance is limited. Despite theconstant change in the insurance market as a whole, this sector has
remained largely unchanged in terms of its providers.
The private doctor and dentist market is dominated by the three mutuals:
the Medical Defence Union, the Medical Protection Society and the Medical
and Dental Defence Union of Scotland. The largest of the mutuals is the
MPS, which has about 50,000 members in the UK. The MDDS is the smallest
with 21,000 members in
