Fuelled by the trend for outsourcing, professionals seeking more freedom in their working lives are flocking towards contracting. However, they are still exposed to litigation so all the relevant insurance documentation must be in order, says Robin Kirkland.

It is estimated that there are now over 150,000 professional
contractors in the UK labour market. This number is expected to increase
rapidly during 2003, after the uncapped 1% increase in National Insurance
contributions imposed in April.


The increase in contractor numbers has been partly fed by demand, as
companies have cut costs by outsourcing specialist areas of their
business.


For example, instead of employing three people in a human resources
department, many companies now use a specialist HR
