Brokers are successfully fending off competition from direct writers
and other distribution channels in the commercial lines market, according
to consulting actuaries Bacon & Woodrow.


Its latest report shows that between 1993 and 1997, brokers held 80% of
the commercial lines market. Within the small commercial sector, the
business was more evenly spread among the various distribution channels,
but brokers were still dominant.
