The recent MMC ruling on travel insurance has made little difference to the market and customers know it is still worth shopping around for cover, says Simon Threadgold.

Travel insurers are still angry about the imposition of 17.5% Income
Premium Tax, but it is not deterring the public from buying. "Customers
don't know what IPT is and don't care," notes Sarah Joannides, marketing
manager at Zurich Financial Services subsidiary, Home and Overseas. "We
haven't noticed any change in sales." Nor has the Monopolies and Mergers
Commission's intervention made much difference. Following the ruling that
discounted holidays should not be conditional on taking out insurance
