Home assistance was originally introduced as an add-on to bolster home insurance sales, but it is now an integral part of buildings and contents policies, says Shona Cronin.

The household assistance market has come a long way since the 1980s
when the industry witnessed the first of the domestic emergency
helplines.


At this time, they were viewed by insurers and brokers as being excellent
product differentiators which could provide a competitive edge. Now, these
services are largely accepted as par for the course by both the industry
providers and the consumer.
