Willis and Towers Watson shareholders approve merger

Deal expected to complete “very early in the New Year”.

Shareholders of Willis Group Holdings and Towers Watson have approved the two companies' merger proposals.

The $18bn (£11.4bn) transaction had been approved by directors from each company in June but ongoing speculation had suggested that the "merger of equals" deal may flounder due to shareholder concerns.

The businesses confirmed that votes at the respective special meetings of shareholders held in the US on 11 December meant the deal can go ahead.
